Legal Studies is the journal of the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS). It is recognised as one of the foremost academic law journals in the UK, and enjoys an international readership both within the common law world and beyond. Legal Studies is a truly generalist peer-reviewed journal, which features a varied range of legal scholarship in each issue. The Editors warmly welcome submissions of excellent, rigorous scholarship of significance and interest to the journal’s generalist readership.

Current and back issues of the journal are available online. Members of the Society receive free online access to Legal Studies as part of their membership.

Submissions

Legal Studies aims to include a variety of scholarly articles in each issue, including articles that adopt doctrinal, theoretical, comparative and/or socio-legal approaches. As a generalist journal, the journal publishes high-quality articles relating to all fields of law, so long as the subject-matter is likely to be of relevance to a wide audience. The Editors are committed to publishing a diversity of scholarship in all senses, including supporting colleagues at all career stages.

Article submissions may be sent via Manuscript Central https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/lest, for editorial consideration. Articles may be up to 12,000 words including footnotes. Where useful, authors may wish to express initial interest by contacting the Editors in advance of formal submission with a title and short abstract by e-mailing legalstudies@legalscholars.ac.uk.

In addition to feature-length articles, from 2023 onwards the journal will include a Current Developments section. This section encompasses the existing opportunity for book reviews, alongside comments on recent case law, law reform proposals or legislative developments. Such comments may be up to 3,000 words, including footnotes. In order to engage the journal’s audience, there will be presumptions that recent developments covered have occurred within the two years prior to submission, and that cases should be decisions from appellate courts in the relevant jurisdiction. Any author interested in contributing such a comment or book review should first contact currentdevelopments@legalscholars.ac.uk. All submitted comments would still be subject to peer review.
