Best Paper and Best Doctoral Paper Prize Winners 2022

We are delighted to announce and extend our congratulations to the winners of the Best Paper Prize and Best Doctoral Paper Prize presented at the SLS Annual Conference 2022 (KCL). Papers were nominated by convenors of the subject sections and judged by a panel consisting of Catharine MacMillan  (immediate past president), James Lee (representing Legal Studies), and Nicola Wake (Subject Sections Secretary). All papers were of a very high quality and a pleasure to review. We thank all of those who presented full papers.

Best Paper Prize

The winner of the Best Paper Prize is Alysia Blackham (University of Melbourne) with “Abandoning Individual Enforcement? Interrogating the Enforcement of Age Discrimination Law”. The panel commended Blackham’s distinctive work, excellent analysis, and engagement with mixed methodologies.

The Best Paper Prize shortlist was:

• Alistair Mills (University of Cambridge) “‘Not Like That’: The Interpretation of Policies, Legislation, and Contracts”
• Ryan Stones (City University of London) “Behavioural Economics and the Formal Rule of Law in Competition Enforcement: One or the Other”

Best Doctoral Paper Prize

The winner of the Best Doctoral Student Prize is Holli Sargeant (University of Cambridge) with “Algorithmic decision-making in financial services: Economic and normative outcomes in consumer credit.” The panel commended Sargeant’s analysis and strong survey of the issues.
